History of AFJROTC
The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) has a rich history dating back to 1911 when Army Lt Edgar R. Steevers founded a noncompulsory cadet corps for high school students in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The program aimed to develop better citizens and was later authorized by the National Defense Act of 1916. The Army implemented JROTC in 1916, and the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 directed the Secretaries of each military service to establish and maintain JROTC units. The first Air Force JROTC programs were opened in 1966. Today, AFJROTC has grown to 744 units worldwide, with 103,000 cadets, and is composed solely of active duty Air Force retirees who are helping to educate and develop tomorrow's leaders. The program's purpose is to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

Who we are
Who we are
VA-961 is a proud AFJROTC unit located in Richlands, Virginia. It was founded in 1996 by Richlands High School to give students the opportunity to be a part of AFJROTC. It is comprised of both Richlands High School, and Richlands Middle School cadets currently and is a growing unit. We enjoy the many privileges of AFJROTC, such as helping the community, learning about space flight and aircraft, and participating in drill and ceremony.
